September 22 Update
Dear Residents & Fellows,
On September 22, we continued negotiations with CIR-SEIU. Our sessions continue to be productive, and we greatly appreciate the discussions at the table as we close gaps on various outstanding contract articles.
- The teams reached agreement in concept on three additional articles, bringing our total to six.
- Article 2 – Non-Discrimination in Employment – 9/22/26
- Article 11 – Grievance Procedure – 9/22/26
- New Article – Required Equipment – 9/22/26
- Article 17 – Lactation Accommodation – 9/8/26
- Article 31 – Holidays – 9/8/26
- New Article – Mileage – 9/8/26
- We remain fully committed to supporting our pregnant Residents and Fellows.
- As a complement to our robust Workplace Accommodations Policy that includes specific pregnancy language, we will be sharing proposed contract language at our next session to highlight the resources available for individuals seeking pregnancy accommodations that address their individual workplace needs and restrictions.
We are committed to reaching an agreement that supports our Residents and Fellows with a competitive salary and benefits package, and we look forward to presenting a comprehensive response at our next session on September 29 that will further narrow some of the remaining gaps. As a reminder, please visit this website for the latest information, bargaining calendar and more. You can also see how our Resident and Fellow wages compare to USCF, UCLA and Mass General Brigham based on our current economic proposal.
Thank you for taking the time to read our latest update and for all you do for our patients and GME community. We greatly appreciate you!

September 15 Update
Dear Residents & Fellows,
On September 15, we continued negotiations with CIR-SEIU. We continue to make progress and greatly appreciate the productive and collaborative discussions with CIR-SEIU. During the session, our team provided the union with an updated comprehensive response, which included an enhanced economic proposal. In addition, we believe we are close to reaching agreement in concept on two additional articles:
- Article 2 – Non-Discrimination in Employment
- Article 11 – Grievance Procedure

Our team also reiterated our commitment to supporting our pregnant Residents and Fellows. This support includes a dedicated GME HR member and the Assistant Dean of GME Well-Being who focus on leave and accommodation needs. Residents and Fellows also have access to a robust Workplace Accommodations Policy with specific pregnancy language. Through an interactive and customized experience, pregnant Residents and Fellows and their provider can work together with the Hospital to identify accommodations that address their individual workplace needs and restrictions. We plan to share proposed contract language highlighting these resources at a future session.
Thank you as always for taking the time to stay informed about the latest developments from the bargaining table. Our next session is on September 22, and we look forward to providing another update at that time. September 8 Update
Dear Residents & Fellows,
On September 8, we continued negotiations with CIR-SEIU and made additional progress. The session was productive and collaborative, and CIR-SEIU provided us with their full comprehensive package proposal response. We appreciated the union’s movement on salary and, as the process continues, we can expect continued movement by both parties as we work together toward an agreement.
We’re also pleased to share that the teams agreed in concept on three articles:
- Article 17 – Lactation Accommodation
- Article 31 – Holidays
- New Article – Mileage
What does an agreement in concept mean?
Because the proposals being exchanged are part of a package, you may not see formal tentative agreements announced for individual articles. Instead, the parties may reach agreement in concept on individual topics as we continue working toward a full agreement. That means the parties have resolved those Articles and issues, and can focus their ongoing efforts on the remaining topics.
Our team is reviewing the union’s full comprehensive package proposal and plans to provide a full response at our next session on September 15. As a reminder, please visit our dedicated negotiation website, SHCGMEnegotiations.com, for the latest information, bargaining calendar and more.

September 1 Update
Dear Residents & Fellows,
On September 1, we officially resumed negotiations with CIR-SEIU. The session was collaborative and productive, and we appreciated the discussions at the table as we work toward our shared goal of reaching an agreement on a new contract we can all support. During the session, our team provided the union with our initial comprehensive response to all CIR-SEIU’s initial proposals, including our opening economic proposal.
We are Committed to Providing Outstanding Education and Competitive Salary & Benefits
We greatly value our Residents and Fellows and are committed to supporting your education and clinical training experience with a competitive salary and benefits package. While a starting point for these important discussions, and knowing there will be additional movement by both sides, our initial economic proposal reinforces that commitment. Specifically, our opening economic proposal would provide:
- Resident and Fellow salary for PGY3 and above that surpasses every other program in the country (including the recently negotiated UCSF contract)
- Resident and Fellow pay for PGY1 and PGY2 that is above all other programs except UCSF (keep in mind this is only our opening proposal)
- Continued access to highly competitive (and in many cases market-leading) benefits:
- A healthcare plan that includes $0 premiums and $0 deductibles for care within the Stanford Provider Network for Residents, Fellows, and their families
- By comparison, 57% of AMCs require a cost share with their healthcare benefits
- Robust housing and relocation allowances that compare favorably with those at other Residency programs
- A healthcare plan that includes $0 premiums and $0 deductibles for care within the Stanford Provider Network for Residents, Fellows, and their families
